Westinghouse offers 17-inch widescreen LCD

Westinghouse Digital on Wednesday introduced a 17-inch widescreen LCD monitor that’s Mac and PC compatible. The new monitor is available now for US$229.

Part of their “HD-Grade” line, the new display features a single Digital Visual Interface (DVI) input, so it can work digitally with new Macs equipped with DVI input. It also sports 1280 x 768 native resolution, 400 cd/m2 maximum brightness, 600:1 contrast ratio, response time of 15 milliseconds and a 170-degree viewing angle. Read more...

Gamers help LCDs to score higher results

The LCD monitor market hit a high of almost 70 per cent growth year on year during June, market watcher GfK has revealed.

GfK put the growth down to two main factors: increased distribution/ availability and plummeting prices.

The biggest demand has been for 18-19in screens, which saw a 347 per cent year-on-year increase in sales units, and now account for 20 per cent of all LCD monitors sold.

The biggest channel share increase was in the retail channel, which now accounts for 29 per cent of 18-19in monitors sold, compared with 21 per cent during June 2004.

Benq tipped to report profit dip

BENQ, which agreed in June to take over Siemens’s unprofitable mobile phone unit, may report a profit drop for the fourth straight quarter on declining handset shipments and lower monitor prices.

Second-quarter net income probably fell 94 per cent to $168 million ($5.3 million) Taiwan dollars (NT) from $NT2.97 billion a year earlier, according to the median forecast of four analysts.
“Operating margin was affected by a reduced revenue base,” said Steven Tseng, an analyst with Taipei’s Yuanta Core Pacific Securities, which has a hold recommendation on the stock. Read more...

ViewSonic VP930b

ViewSonic recently launched two new high-end LCD monitors (VP730b/VP930b), and the company now aims to grab half of the medium-to-high end market in Taiwan this year, according to Alan Chang, vice president of ViewSonic’s sales and marketing department.

Both models feature a response time of 8ms, support a resolution up to 1280?1024 and a viewing angle of 170-degrees. Read more...


Samsung Electronics develops 82-inch TFT-LCD panel

The company said that the new product features excellent quality in terms of resolution and color, and it has a 180 degree visual angle.

The panel will be manufactured at the company?s new seventh-generation (7G) plant, which will be run by S-LCD, a joint venture between Samsung and Sony.

The fab will begin mass production at the end of March and will focus on LCD TV panels, with sizes including 23-inch (24 per substrate), 26-inch (18 per substrate), 32-inch (12 per substrate), 40-inch (8 per substrate) and 46-inch (6 per substrate).

Samsung said in January prices for liquid crystal displays (LCD) would fall further in the first quarter after almost halving in the second half of last year, but could recover as early as the second quarter. Read more...


LG Philips LCD to invest 1 bln usd in Polish flat screen plants

LG Philips LCD, the joint venture of LG Electronics and Royal Philips Electronics NV, plans to spend 1 bln eur building two factories in Poland to make flat screens, said stockmarket newspaper Parkiet.

Parkiet said both sites will be at Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, in the south west of the country. They will employ 12,000 people.

The report follows a comment by deputy Polish economy minister Marcin Kaszuba at the beginning of this week that early September would see the announcement of the largest investment ever in democratic Poland, though he did not even say which sector it would be in. Read more...
