The ASP (average selling prices) for LCD monitor panels is expected to drop 10% in the first quarter amid lower demand in US and Europe.

However, prices for LCD monitors will remain flat in the second quarter and are expected to rebound in the second half of 2006 as demand picks up.

Last quarter, HannStar shipped 3.22 million TFT LCD panels, up 10% on quarter, with the 19-inch segment accounting for 65% of its total revenues in the fourth quarter, the company indicated.

HannStar remains optimistic about its outlook for this year. Its fifth-generation plant (5G) is expected to reach full capacity (monthly capacity of 120,000 substrates) in the second quarter, Joe said. In addition, one of its 3G lines will be converted to small-to medium-size LCD panel production by the end of the second quarter, the company projected.

However, as the 15-inch LCD monitor market is being squeezed by larger size segments, HannStar will continue decreasing its 15-inch LCD monitor panel shipments this quarter, with related shipment focusing mainly on China and emerging markets, the panel maker noted.

Prices for 17-inch LCD monitor panels have continued to reach record lows in the first half of this month, falling to US$145, down from US$149 in the second half of last month.

In the first half of January, prices for 17-inch monitor panels fell to their lowest level in this crystal cycle and prices are continuing to decrease this month due to seasonal effects and continued capacity ramps at panel makers, according to sources.

Monitor makers said they have lowered their inventory levels from two weeks to one to avoid further losses as prices continue dropping.

Although WitsView has projected that quotes for the segment will continue sliding to US$140 by the end of this month, the market research firm thinks it unlikely that quotes will fall further, as US$140 is about the cost level for first-tier panel makers.

A: An LCD is a ‘’Liquid Crystal Display,” which if you read and think about for a moment sounds pretty weird. How can a crystal be liquid?

Well, a liquid is supposed to be something that flows and, microscopically, it is a sort of random mess. A crystal is something that has some regularity to its structure, like a grain of salt, and microscopically you see atoms all nicely lined up in rows.

In a liquid crystal as in a watch, you have something like a liquid with lots of tiny little rods suspended in it. This has an element of randomness and fluidity to it like a liquid, but you can also imagine the rods lining up making it a bit like a crystal.

While other bendable screen designs are based on OLED technology, this TFT LCD screen provides VGA (640 x 480) but is made from plastic substrates rather than the glass typically found in consumer LCD products.

There is no word on when similar screens will become available at acceptable price/availability levels on the consumer market, but it’s interesting to see the future regardless. The first practical application for these that comes to mind would be in industrial tablet/notebook designs.

There are four monitors that all sport 17″ screens. Top of the range is the PM17TU, which has a 3ms response time and a 500cd/m brightness with a 600:1 contrast ratio. This model will come in at $399, with the low-end model (8ms, 400cd/m brightness) costing $299.

As a bonus, ASUS are offering a unique zero dead pixel warranty for an entire year, which means that if one of the blighters shows up at any point in the first twelve months, you can get a replacement. This is a pretty awesome step for a monitor manufacturer to take, and looks like being ASUS’ unique selling point in an otherwise competitive market.

ASUS will also offer a three year standard warranty.
